11GEO

Level 1 Geography

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mr T. Barge.

Level 1 Geography

The theme of Year 11 Geography is ‘global changes and challenges.’ The Earth is undergoing significant change due to global warming, an increase in extreme natural events, and the rapid growth of urban areas. In this course you will be able to explore natural disasters, natural processes, and te taiao/environments in local, New Zealand, Pacific, and global settings. By looking at things from different perspectives, we will develop a holistic understanding which will inform us about how to best respond to changes and meet the challenges that our Earth faces.

Topics

Extreme Natural Events: Investigate the increasing frequency and intensity of natural disasters such as cyclones, floods, tornadoes, and wildfires. Study earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions. Where do they occur, how do they happen, and what are their implications for human populations?

Natural Processes and Environments: Examine natural processes like plate tectonics, glaciation, coastal erosion, and fluvial activity, understanding how they interact to shape the environment and how they affect people.

Field work/research is an important part of Geography. This course will include a local field trip to study impacts on land along our coast as well as a trip to Christchurch to study earthquakes.

Geography uses several forms of technology. In this course you will develop skills in GIS (Geographic Information Systems) - a mapping technology which is useful when investigating the location of natural phenomena such as disasters. Google Earth and Google Maps will also be used throughout the course.

Year 11 Geography also gives you the opportunity to gain literacy and numeracy credits. In order to achieve your NCEA Level 1, you need to get 20 literacy and numeracy credits. In 2024, you will be able to achieve 10 literacy and 5 numeracy credits through Geography assessments that will count towards your NCEA.
