Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mr T. Barge

Level 1 Geography

Part One: ‘Nature’s Fury’

‘Nature’s Fury’ is a course based around extreme natural events such as volcanic eruptions, hurricanes/cyclones, and tornadoes, many of which are becoming more intense. The main topics include tsunamis and earthquakes, focusing on the Japan tsunami of 2011 and the Canterbury earthquakes of 2010-2011. Students taking this course will develop new skills in GIS (geographic information systems/mapping technology) where they will be able to investigate earthquakes in the Canterbury region. As part of this study, there will be a field trip to Christchurch.

Part Two: '7 Billion and Counting'

In the course ‘7 Billion and Counting,’ students will explore world population. Special attention will be given to studying the countries of India and China. Learn why India will soon pass China as the most populated country in the world, and why some countries are decreasing in size. When will the world's population stop growing? Students taking this course will use mapping technologies such as ‘Google My Maps’ and ‘Google Earth’ to conduct geographic research, and students will do a special study of tourism issues in New Zealand.
