Level 1 Health Studies

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mr P. McGregor.

This course focuses on Level 6 of the Health Education Curriculum. In Health, the focus is on improving personal well-being, as well as other people (interpersonal) and societal in general through learning in health-related contexts. We will take a holistic view of Health and cover all key underlying concepts of the New Zealand Health Curriculum e.g. Hauora (Well-Being), Heath Promotion, Socio-Ecological Perspective and Attitudes and Values. We will explore Hauora (Well-Being), Mental Health, Substances that impact Well-Being and Relationships & Sexuality Education. The main focus of this course is to equip you with the necessary skills to maintain and develop your personal well-being, both now and in the future; as well as prepare you for future academic and vocational opportunities. 

This course is compulsory to all Year 11 students and will automatically be loaded in as one of the pre-set subject selections. Please note that students will only be entered and complete ONE of the external assessments. Student elect what external standard they would like to be entered in.

Term 1
Health Studies A.S 1.1 92008 (Internal) 5 Credits
“Demonstrate understanding of wellbeing through the application of a model of health”
The 3 Key Areas of Learning:
For Food and Nutrition this could be:
• cooking for whānau
• tikanga associated with food.
For Mental Health this could be:
• managing a stressful situation
• positive decision making around alcohol or other drugs.
For Relationships and Sexuality this could be:
• inclusiveness of indigenous sexuality and gender identities
• promoting healthy relationships.

A model of health could include:
• Te Whare Tapa Whā
• Koloa Model of Health
• Fonofale
• Te Wheke Model of Health

“Demonstrate Understanding of a decision-making process in a health-related situation”

Possible Contexts
Health-related situations for Food and Nutrition could include:
• using maramataka as a guide for cultivating food
• growing your own vegetables (cost of living and responses of buying low-cost foods)
• how to encourage the preparation of a greater diversity of meals in a family home
• which sources of information about healthy eating for teens are most reliable
• which marketing claims to the nutritional value of food are genuine (based on evidence) and which are manipulation of evidence used as marketing ploys.

For Mental Health this could be:
• how to respond to a cyberbullying situation
• how to respond to a situation where there is pressure to use substances
• how to regulate screentime and what material is viewed online (e.g. limiting time spent, avoiding disturbing online content)
• how to manage a stressful situation.

For Relationships and Sexuality this could be:
• how to break up or leave an intimate relationship
• what to do in a controlling or manipulative relationship
• how to challenge the behaviours of peers/friends that watch a lot of explicit material online
• what to say and do when someone asks to have sex
• how to exercise own rights and responsibilities in a relationship
• how to address homophobic or other non-inclusive attitudes in the school or community.

Factors could also include:
• impacts on interpersonal relationships (socio-ecological perspectives)
• legal issues or risks
• social and cultural norms
• short and long-term consequences of the decision.

External Assessments (Optional)
Health Studies A.S 1.3 92010 (External) 5 Credits
“Demonstrate Understanding of the Personal, and Societal Factors that Influence Hauora”

Assessment Format
Students will be required to demonstrate their understanding of personal, interpersonal, and societal factors that influence hauora in a given context by analysing a scenario.
Students will answer ONE question with multiple parts which contribute to the whole response.
Students are required to provide evidence of their own thinking and use the scenario and resources
provided to support their answers.
The scenario and resources provided will fall into two of three Health and Physical Education Key Areas of Learning:
• Food and Nutrition
• Mental Health
• Relationships and Sexuality

Health Studies A.S 1.4 92011 (External) 5 Credits
“Demonstrate Understanding of Strategies that enhance Hauora”

Assessment Format
Students will produce a report in response to the scenario and supporting resources.
The scenario and resources provided will fall into two of three Health and Physical Education Key Areas of Learning:
• Food and Nutrition
• Mental Health
• Relationships and Sexuality.

Presentations should be brief and to the point.
It is expected that students responses do not exceed 800 words.
The report must be submitted as a document.

Note: Students will do a maximum of 15 credits for the year, 2 internals worth 5 credits each (compulsory) & the Option of 1 of the 2 Externals on Offer.

Recommended Prior Learning

Junior Health Education & Physical Education in the Junior School or the Junior Academies e.g., Global, Active & Abs to Alps
