Level 1 History

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Miss H. Shears.

Level 1 History

This year we explore what History is and how the past shapes today and the future. An introduction to historical concepts and research skills will provide a framework to research historic events by interpreting and analysing historic sources.

We will start with an overview of Aotearoa New Zealand's history, identifying significant events, movements, and the people that have shaped the development of our country. We will also explore how we commemorate these locally, nationally, and globally. Students will then locate relevant primary sources to research an historic event or person of their choice.

The topic of Social Justice will give us the opportunity to investigate and compare the experiences of different groups including Women, African Americans, Maori, Pacific Islanders, South Africans, Jews, and Japanese Americans. We will compare different perspectives and research leaders and/or significant events on the journey toward equality.

Finally we will look at the causes of World War II and how this war was experienced by New Zealanders including volunteering and conscription, the Maori war effort, rationing, censorship, soldier experiences, Prisoners of war (both overseas and in NZ), the treatment of enemy aliens, and conscientious objectors.

This course focuses on developing research and critical thinking skills.
