Adventure Tourism - a pathway to adventure

If you want a career in Adventure Tourism where no two days are the same, combine practical learning with theory-based learning by taking a package that includes both Outdoor Education and Tourism and offers you a pathway to an exciting career. This course of two subjects will give you skills and knowledge to potentially guide visitors in various adventure activities across New Zealand and overseas. Gain transferable skills that give you the option of further education after you leave school or can take you straight into a job in the adventure tourist industry or in outdoor pursuits.

55 Course Credits Available

## If you choose Adventure Tourism - you will be entered directly into the Tourism (LINK here) and Outdoor Education (LINK here) courses

In Year 13 Tourism you will study: World Travel Geography, The Tourism Industry, Promote a New Zealand Tourist Destination, Tourism in Australia and Tourism in New Zealand.

In Year 13 Outdoor Education you will study:  Adrenalin Forest (health and safety, risk analysis), tramping and camping, kaitiakitanga (environment, marae - eeling, planting, care and protection), Adventure Based Learning (working with others in a team to provide fun activities with specific learning outcomes, team building - a pre-cursor to corporate team building).

The course includes a Field Trip to Mount Cook where you will visit an accommodation provider (Hermitage Hotel), an attraction (Sir Edmund Hillary Centre), and participate in an activity (Glacier Explorers Boat trip).  This could combine with an Outdoor Ed-style camping & tramping expedition, which will involve setting up camp, providing adventure-based learning opportunities, and survival skills – snow caves, team building challenges, design and use of outdoor equipment.  Other opportunities could be glacier kayaking, swim at Blue Lakes, Star gazing, cycle trails, or 4 x 4 quad bikes
