Vocational studies (part 1)

The Vocational studies course is an opportunity to gain experience that supports other vocational pathway programs at Mountainview. Courses such as hospitality, agriculture and horticulture, rural studies, tourism or building, which you may be thinking about, can be enhanced by selecting vocational studies. Your vocational studies course is exactly that - your course, designed for you and also tied into looking for gateway placements and work experience for you in local businesses that interest you.

You will  explore a range of future possibilities and career options. You will be encouraged to seek work experience through a Gateway placement, and learn about workplace rights and responsibilities. Students will have the opportunity to gain their learners or restricted driver’s license, first aid certificate, and/or a personalized qualification for an industry of their own choice eg. mechanic. Students will practice interview skills and prepare a CV that reflects their new work experience, skills, and qualifications. You will also be able to complete courses in first aid, health and safety, and a range of other opportunities such as fire safety, Working on Te Kura (correspondence school) subjects such as Legal Studies, Classical Studies and Accounting are also possibilities to study. There will also be financial Literacy units to work on like Insurance, Budgeting, Buying a House.

The vocational studies course can be selected as an individual course as just 1 subject choice or it can also be extended into a second option line Vocational studies Part 2. Just remember if you choose both parts of vocational studies then you will be expected to complete a wider variety of assessment opportunities, not 1 course over 2 lines.
