Level 1 Commerce - COM 101
Get into groups, come up with a idea, sell it, make some money (and earn some credits).
Level 1 Commerce course is for students to develop and carry out a business plan for a product-based business, including preparing a marketing plan and financial plan for Market Day.
Students will be exposed to different local, national and global business case studies. We will plan excursions to successful local businesses where students' can see these businesses in action first hand to improve their own business.
There will be the opportunity for students to complete an external NCEA examination in Term 4 based on the learnings throughout the entire course.
The aims of a Business Studies programme are:
- to understand the place of business as an integral part of the local and global society and economy;
- to promote knowledge and an understanding of business as a productive activity;
- to foster an experiential, as well as a theoretical approach to learning using arrange of business contexts;
- to explore and promote an enterprise culture;
- to develop financial literacy and enterprise skills.
To achieve these aims, students will:
- understand and appreciate the factors and organisations that influence business objectives, decisions and activities;
- develop key competencies in managing self, participating and contributing, relating to others, thinking and using language, symbols and texts in a business context;
- develop knowledge and understanding of how business is organised, financed and operated;
- participate in common curriculum experiences in English, Mathematics andStatistics, Science, Technology, Social Sciences, The Arts, Health and PhysicalEducation, utilising business contexts that are racially and gender inclusive;
- develop initiative and the skills of problem solving and decision-making;
- select relevant sources of information and apply appropriate techniques to present and interpret data effectively.
The Business Studies programme incorporates five themes:

- Functions of Business
- People inBusiness
- Business Management
- Business Environment

Introduction to innovation, entrepreneurship and design thinking - plenty of hands on, practical tasks where students are asked to think about creative solutions to real life problems. This is the basis of design thinking. Students will then complete a short 2 credit Internal Assessment.
This learning will form the basis of product selection for your Business!
Formation of a business - students will form their groups, determine their product, establish jobs/roles and set the objectives for your business.
Marketing and selling of your product to make a profit!
Students will plan to sell their products to the school. This will involve creating a marketing plan, organisation of all the resources required and promoting to your potential customers.
The Marketing Plan will earn 3 credits as an Internal Assessment.
Sell your product according to your plan to make some money! After Market Day, students will reflect on their learning and explain how they would do it differently next time.
Completion of Market Day Internal Assessment will earn students 6 credits.
Students will then demonstrate their learning throughout the year via the only External Assessment of the course by looking at the internal features of a small business.
NCEA External Examination - 4 credits.
This course is eligible for subject endorsement.
This course is approved for University Entrance.
Total Credits Available: 15 credits.
Externally Assessed Credits: 4 credits.
Internally Assessed Credits: 11 credits.
