Getting Started with Course Selection

The aim of this website is to provide a guide to students in planning their pathways towards further education, training and employment. It contains a detailed list of courses to be offered at MVHS, along with a listing of teachers/personnel who can give you guidance with your course selections.

Dear Parents and Students,

As you embark on or continue with the journey of secondary school education under the NCEA framework, subject choice plays a pivotal role in shaping your academic path and future prospects. Choose subjects aligned with your passions and strengths. Keep in mind potential career aspirations and tertiary education or further study requirements. Importance should be placed on ensuring a well-rounded selection is considered in order to keep options open - particularly if you don't know what you want to do when you leave school. Embrace new challenges while maintaining a balanced workload to safeguard your well-being. Seek guidance from teachers, counsellors, and seniors, leveraging their insights. Remember, NCEA is not just about grades; it's about holistic growth. Your subject choices today pave the way for success tomorrow.

Things to think about:

Once you have made your selections:

Initially, your selections will be used to build the school timetable for 2024. Once option selections have been completed and the timetable is complete you will be able to see your timetable and if necessary make some adjustments or confirm your course.

Sometimes you may be required to select a further course or we will have used a backup course. This happens for two reasons. The first is that the courses do not run as there are not enough students selecting the course. The second reason being that two of your subjects end up clashing as they are in the same line. You will get the opportunity to check and confirm your selections before the start of the 2024 year.

If you do not know what you want to do in your future, do not worry, that is extremely common. Keep your options broad. Remember: Make your own choices!
