Rural Studies

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mrs J. McNaught

Rural Studies is an Agricultural and Horticultural course that is available at both Level 2 and Level 3. This is predominately a Unit Standards based course that will utilise Mountainview's garden and farm.  This course will give you experience into the more practical aspects of Agriculture and Horticulture.

Level 2 and 3: Rural Studies will allow students to explore and make sense of a range of different aspects of Agriculture and Horticulture. During term one students will spend time outdoors preparing the garden for summer planting.  Students will complete two practical unit standards, first they will plant vegetables from seeds to supply the school canteen and then they will grow their own plants from cuttings.

As we move into the cooler months students will explore and make sense of farm animal anatomy and physiology and some of the health challenges animals face on the farm.  The students will learn about common diseases that animals in New Zealand can get and what is done on farm to prevent illness to animals.

Students will get the opportunity to plan an investigation with an Agricultural or Horticultural focus.   Students can take this course alongside the Agricultural Science & Business course also offered.  There may also be the opportunity to learn some more practical skills such as fencing etc. You do not have to have studied Agriculture at Level 1 to do this course. It is also a great course if you enjoy a more practical approach to learning.

For more information please see Mrs McNaught.
