Embark on an exciting journey to learn Spanish, tailored for all abilities from beginners to advanced learners! This inclusive course ensures every student progresses at their own pace, aligning with Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles and New Zealand curriculum levels 1-5. Through interactive activities, you’ll develop skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing Spanish while exploring the rich cultures of Spanish-speaking countries. Learn to cook, dance, make arts & crafts typically found in this amazing culture. A unique incentive awaits—students who advance through the levels will have the opportunity to join our senior school trip to Spain, enriching their language experience with real-world immersion. Term 1
Who Are We?
Begin the year by learning to introduce yourself in Spanish and find out how Spanish teens express who they are! We’ll explore Waitangi Day and Spain’s 15th birthdays, comparing customs like the Māori hongi and Spanish kisses. For Valentine’s Day, see how gift-giving is different in Spain and practice fun phrases to show appreciation and friendship through authentic card giving.
Term 2
Daily Life & Holidays
Get into everyday Spanish life—learn phrases to talk about your day, hobbies, and plans. This term we’ll connect with Easter, Golden Week, and ANZAC Day. Practice role-playing real-life scenarios, like ordering food and asking for directions. Discover Spanish holiday traditions and compare them with what we do in New Zealand!
Term 3
Festivals and Stories
Jump into the excitement of Spanish festivals like Independence Day and connect with Matariki, Māori New Year. Learn to talk about family, cook food, and explore Spanish myths and stories. We’ll discover famous ruins and reflect on and compare these with Māori traditions whilst learning how to talk about the past.
Term 4
Future Goals and Travel
Wrap up the year by planning future adventures! Learn the Spanish you’d need for a trip—how to catch a train, introduce yourself to new friends, and talk about your goals. Compare Holloween in New Zealand with Mexico’s Dia de los Muertos, learning phrases for future plans. For those sticking with Spanish, this term helps you get ready for a potential senior trip to Spain!

If you can imagine it, Spanish can help you get there. Being multi-lingual makes you an asset for any company/ business/ workplace. With the introduction of technology, the world is a small place these days and being able to problem solve, think critically and converse across languages and cultures opens a multitude of doors that would otherwise not exist.
