Course Description

In this course, students will embark on a journey through the essential elements of Kapa Haka, gaining a deep understanding of its cultural significance and historical roots. From the powerful haka to the graceful poi dances, students will learn the art of storytelling through movement, song, and expression.

Cultural Appreciation: Develop an appreciation for Maori culture, history, and traditions through the lens of Kapa Haka.

Performance Skills: Learn fundamental Kapa Haka performance techniques, including posture, vocalization, and choreography.

Haka Mastery: Explore the various types of haka, mastering the iconic moves and understanding the historical contexts behind each.

Poi Techniques: Hone skills in the handling of poi balls, mastering both traditional and contemporary poi dances.

Waiata (Songs): Engage in the learning and performance of traditional waiata, understanding the role of music in Maori storytelling.

Teamwork and Collaboration: Foster a sense of unity and teamwork through group performances, emphasizing the importance of collective effort in Kapa Haka.

Cultural Protocol: Gain insight into the cultural protocols and etiquette associated with Kapa Haka performances, promoting respect and understanding.

You will learn to understand performance components and also develop your skills to become a more confident performer as you navigate and learn different aspects and styles of performance. Tikanga plays an integral role in ensuring that all learning is safe and our well-being is catered as per Te Ao Māori.
