History Level 1
Course Description
Teacher in Charge: Mr K. Mclaughlin.
Level 1 History
This year we explore what History is and how the past shapes today and the future. An introduction to historical concepts and research skills will provide a framework to research historic events by interpreting and analysing historic sources.
This course will include an overview of Aotearoa New Zealand's history, identifying significant events, movements, and the people that have shaped the development of our country. We will also explore how we commemorate these locally, nationally, and globally. Students are required to locate relevant primary sources in order to research an historic event or person of their choice.
Through the topic of Social Justice, students have the opportunity to investigate and compare the experiences of different groups including Women, African Americans, Māori, Pacific Islanders, South Africans, Jews, and Japanese Americans. We will compare different perspectives and research leaders and/or significant events on the journey toward equality.
Our course also includes the World Wars and how these conflicts were experienced by New Zealanders. Our coverage includes volunteering and conscription, the Māori war effort, rationing, censorship, soldier experiences, prisoners of war (both overseas and in NZ), the treatment of enemy aliens, and conscientious objectors.
Overall, this course focuses on developing research and critical thinking skills.
