History Level 2
Course Description
Teacher in Charge: Mr K. Mclaughlin.
Level 2 History
Our theme this year is Colliding Cultures and Perspectives.
We will start with our field trip to Central Otago to help us investigate the Otago Gold Rush. Our focus will be on how the miners converged on the area from all around the world. Lured by the temptation of wealth, they often found hardship, disease, and poverty. We will investigate how miners adapted to the harsh climate and conditions, how miners from around the world co-existed, prejudice and discrimination against the Chinese, and why Maori had little interest in gold.
In the second term we will explore and write a report about a significant historical event (to be selected by the class) and investigate the causes and consequences of this event and different perspectives on this event. Events could include, Parihaka, the Dawn Raids, the attack on Pearl Harbour, The Holocaust, the My Lai Massacre in Vietnam, the 1981 Springbok Tour, or the Rainbow Warrior bombing.
We will end the year by exploring conspiracy theories and considering how these can be harmful. We will focus on analysing the historical facts and assessing the reliability of sources to make objective judgements. We will consider why conspiracy theories are so common and spread so quickly, and why people might want to challenge accepted historical narratives.
Note: Students will complete a selection of assessments up to a total of 20 credits.
