Geography Level 3
Course Description
Teacher in Charge: Miss K. Fisher.
Level 3 Geography
In Level Three Geography you will learn how tourism can have both positive and negative consequences for places around the world. In this study, we will examine global settings, as well as Queenstown and Bali. We will also study Antarctica, and look at the impact humans are having on this unique continent - managing tourism is vital for Antarctica’s future. Another topic that has required careful planning is the rebuild of Christchurch’s CBD following the devastating earthquakes. How do they plan to rebuild a city? Who makes the decisions? How are different people affected? Three of the topics will involve field trips (to Queenstown, Christchurch CBD, and the Antarctic Centre).
Note: Students will complete a selection of assessments up to a total of 20 credits. This is a University approved course and 14 credits are offered internally, with a 4 credit external examination on offer.
Topics
Global Tourism: Investigate the growth of tourism around the world. Which areas have developed most? What has contributed to this growth? How has this affected people?
Tourism in Bali and Queenstown: Analyse how tourism operates in these places. What are the main attractions? How does tourism benefit these places and what are the downsides of tourism on the people and the environments?
Antarctica: Learn about the early explorers to Antarctica. What are the main activities on Antarctica today? With its growing popularity, how can we manage the numbers going forward?
Planning and Decision-Making: The Christchurch rebuild is a very significant event in New Zealand’s history. Learn how planning is carried out and what needs to be considered when dealing with something of this magnitude.
Field work/research is an important part of Geography. This course will include a field trip to Queenstown to conduct geographic research and a trip to Christchurch to see the anchor projects like the Convention Centre and the Sports Stadium, as well as a visit to the Antarctic Centre.
