Course Description

Level 1 Spanish - L1SPN

Modules include:   • introducing and describing yourself, family, friends & home • holidays and free time • body and mind • school life• the place where I live • future plans

Want to be able to communicate effectively and think differently? Then, this course is for you. Not only will you learn the basics to get you through your education of a lifetime, but the above modules on offer for 2025 will also fulfill your Internal assessment requirements. You will achieve these through portfolios that will be added to throughout the year and will be completed in Term II and III. There is a possibility of gaining 10 credits internally. These cover writing, a speech presentation, and partaking in conversations in Spanish with your fellow classmates. Another 5 credits can be gained through external examination. Due to being a language, unfortunately, neither Literacy nor Numeracy credits are available.

Course Overview

Term 1
Students will explore the language and culture that surrounds themselves, family, friends. We will do this by exploring what they enjoy doing during free time and holidays. By experimenting with language to discuss their daily routines, students will be able to discuss future plans for weekends, holidays etc. We will explore the difference between New Zealand's people and culture with those of Spanish descent.

Term 2
This term, students will explore the vocabulary around food, body and health. We will learn about the culture that surrounds food and the celebrations that come with it.

Term 3
Students explore their school life and make comparisons between themselves and those of Spanish speaking origin. They will look outside of their surroundings to discover the community in which they live.

Term 4
This term, students will look to the future and what plans they wish to make. We will look at their plans or dreams of what they would like to do further down the track: whether it be educational or a holiday. We will explore the different possibilities whilst completing our final requirements and preparations for the year.

Recommended Prior Learning

Students will build a platform of skills and work as the year continues. As the year progresses, skills and structures will be taught that will enable students to learn and complete the assessment tasks. Students will be required to record and present spoken word. This component of the course is compulsory.

Pathway

Languages take you to places that you never dreamed of. They open doors to you that are closed to others, simply because you are able to speak more than one language. Languages literally enable you to think differently.
Job roles and career areas you could work in:
The most obvious career opportunities for language students and graduates are working as interpreters or translators. Careers in the diplomatic service and telecommunications also often require an aptitude for languages.

Language students’ interest often goes beyond a simple desire to understand the language and includes a passion for foreign cultures as well. This could be a great advantage in the business world. Many blue-chip multinational recruiters want employees who have a global outlook and are sensitive to cultural differences.

The following job roles would enable you to draw on the communication and problem-solving skills developed during your studies. Further qualifications or training are likely to be required. Some of these careers would make direct use of your language skills:
