Rural Science Level 2
Course Description
Teacher in Charge: T. Gee.
The Level 2 Rural Science course provides students with a hands-on, practical approach to science, focusing on real-world applications in environmental, plant, and animal sciences. Designed as an alternative pathway for students who may not be pursuing University Entrance (UE) subjects, this course builds on the foundational knowledge gained in the Level 1 Foundation Science course and offers a continuation into more specialised areas of science.
Students will engage in a variety of practical activities and gain valuable skills relevant to primary industries. The course includes the following components:
Maintain a documented work record for a primary industry operation: Students will learn to keep accurate and detailed records, an essential skill in any primary industry role.
Demonstrate knowledge of soils and fertilisers: This module will cover the basics of soil science and the use of fertilisers, helping students understand the importance of soil management in agriculture.
Describe breeds and classes of cattle, and identification and records for cattle: Students will gain knowledge about different cattle breeds, their characteristics, and the importance of accurate record-keeping in animal management.
Install, dismantle, and store temporary electric fences: Practical skills in setting up and managing electric fences will be developed, while developing an understanding of electricity and safety.
This course is perfect for students who are interested in science but prefer a more applied and less academic approach. It provides valuable skills and knowledge that can lead to careers in agriculture, environmental management, and other related fields, though it does not directly lead to UE science subjects.
